Participation: Moving Between Worlds: Summer workshop with Andrea Olsen and Caryn McHose

June 30 - July 2nd, 2023
Bergen DanseSenter, Bergan, Norway

Caryn Mc Hose and Andrea Olsen

Near the end of my Masters's work, with tired eyes, a mushy brain, and a computer hunch, I was absolutely thrilled and grateful to have the chance to participate in this workshop in Bergen, Norway, with renowned movement educators Caryn Mc Hose and Andrea Olsen, not to mention an amazing group of movers and dancers.

“Betweenness is a central theme. We wake in the morning, move from silence to speaking, indoors to outdoors, private to public, and personal to professional with multiple transitions. As we communicate with different parts of ourselves, fellow humans, and our surroundings, we cross thresholds from one dimensional realm to another. Amidst all these transitions not-knowing is constant: there is a gap between where we were and where we are going…In this state of betweenness, we are immersed in fresh possibility.”
(From Olsen’s Moving Between Worlds, A Guide to Embodied Living and Communicating, Wesleyan University Press, 2022

Together, we will explore movement practices that you can do on your own to establish the delicious flow between groundedness and spaciousness in daily life or artistic practice. Drawing on the body of work developed by Andrea Olsen and Caryn McHose over the past four decades in experiential anatomy and authentic movement, we move, write, and reflect on the process of perceiving freshly in service of more conscious living and making.

I will be moderating this event for Cuzen Matcha on Thursday night with Rev. Takafumi Kawakami for a special tea and meditation experience. It’s the perfect opportunity to unwind and recenter. Click on the Zoom and Youtube links for the event here. Hope to see you there!

Our brain understands that tea is healthy, but how do we feel it inside our bodies? Reverend Takafumi of Shunkoin Temple in Kyoto, takes us on a journey into embodying the experience and benefits of drinking tea. The tea is followed by a guided zen meditation. Everyone is welcome to this special World Meditation Day event. We invite you to prepare your matcha or other favorite comforting beverage just ahead of time.

Rev. Kawakami is the deputy head priest of Shunkoin Temple (established in 1590) in Kyoto. He has been a researcher at the Well-being Research Center at Doshisha University and at Keio Media Design (KMD) at Keio University. Kawakami has lectured at MIT and Brown University, and he has led meditation classes for INSEAD, MIT, Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan School of Business, and others at Shunkoin.
